SINGLE RELEASE : “NEW DAY” – MARTY BREEN

NEW DAY is Brisbane-based singer songwriter Marty Breen’s first single release from his forthcoming album #ETERNITY which was recorded in Brisbane’s AIRLOCK STUDIOS in late 2021. Available on Spotify, Apple Music and all DSP’s from Friday 18 February through MGM Distribution.

Recovering from a recent major health scare, Marty said the lesson was clear and simple: “Love is eternal. And that’s what NEW DAY is about”, Marty said.

“Worried that my two young daughters would soon have to grow up without a dad, I was going to write them a memoire. But then unexpectedly some beautiful songs began appearing in my dreams, and before I knew it, I had written an album. Way better than a memoire,” Marty said.

“NEW DAY is the first release from the album (coming mid-2022) and one of several songs I have written around the theme that love is eternal. I don’t want to necessarily sound like a preacher, but this experience is my truth. It’s a positive message which applies as equally to me as it does to any one of us. Our love outlives us,” Marty said.

The theme of the album was inspired by Olympic 100m backstroke champion Kaylee McKeown’s speech after she won gold at the Tokyo Olympics in August 2021, where she said she felt her dad’s presence beside her in the pool as she swam to victory. Kaylee lost her dad to brain cancer just before the Olympics.

“I had just arrived home from life-saving brain surgery. I was hearing Kaylee say that even though her dad wasn’t with her in Tokyo, his love was still so strong that it lifted her to Olympic glory. And at that moment it became apparent to me that love is eternal. I wasn’t just hearing it. I witnessed it. It had a profound impact on me” Marty said.

“It was exactly the message I needed to hear at that time, as I thought I was finished. So in an instant my mindset flipped from ‘how will the kids cope’ to ‘they’ll be just fine without me’. And that lifted the emotional burden, and removed any fears that I had about my fate. After that, the songs started pouring out” Marty said.

“So I will always be grateful to Kaylee, a fellow Queenslander. She has a tattoo on her foot with her dad’s words to her “I’ll always be with you”, which I have built into the chorus of NEW DAY, and into the lyrics of a few other songs on the album” Marty said.

“Kaylee and her family’s courage has been incredibly inspiring. To me she is a true champion, in and out of the pool, and her dad Sholto must have been as well” Marty said.

About Marty

Marty Breen is a Brisbane (Meanjin)-based singer songwriter who likes to label his music ‘organic Australian folk’. “I’m a proud Aussie of Irish descent. I want to sound Australian. I want to sing about things that matter to me and to us as a community, and about issues of the day. I want my songs to have a long shelf-life. So for me it is compelling to sing about things that really matter. My hope is that #ETERNITY is received as inspired by my optimistic outlook on life, and with a bright and positive energy and message” Marty said.

#ETERNITY is Marty’s second studio album, with his debut Origin released in 2006 when he was living in Lennox Head. Just after ‘Origin’ was released Marty returned to a senior political and corporate career before a major health scare miraculously delivered him back to songwriting.

#ETERNITY’s ten tracks are a collection of melodic singer-songwriter ballads mixed in with catchy high-energy light pop-rock with influences from the classic songwriters of the 1970s-90s. There is a modern Irish feel to the album and artwork, reflecting Marty’s family heritage. His lyrics are serious, thoughtful and powerful, and carefully matched and inspired by his melodies.

Since the release of ‘Origin’ in 2006) Marty has won a couple of local songwriting awards and received widespread airplay across Australia thanks to Community Broadcasting Association of Australia’s AMRAP program and MGM Distribution, especially on BAY FM, 4ZZZ and local ABC. Marty says he loves working with community radio. “Community is where my heart is. It is my natural fit as a songwriter.”
